Music, the Food of Life...

"Music is the vernacular of the human soul." --Geoffrey Latham

I cannot imagine life without music--since I was six years old, I have been engrossed in a world of music. I play the violin, piano, viola, and a bit of guitar, and in no other area of life do I find such capacity for pure joy, sorrow, excitement, tranquility, passion, and peacefulness--all in one. I can be moved as easily from playing in a Brahms string quintet as from singing (quite poorly) along to a Police song on my boombox. That's because I believe that good music knows no category. Truly good music feeds the soul; with words or without, it does something for the human spirit that no other medium can.

My non-classical music interests are just as strong, and quite varied. I shy away from the "plastic pop" of today's pre-fab music world and generally prefer the older rock from the 60s and 70s, as well as many 40s and 50s tunes. I also like scattered current artists such as Sting, Billy Joel, the Corrs, and most of the older 60s musicians who are still recording new music. Mostly, however, I love the music of the Beatles and especially Paul McCarntey!

"Music speaks of Platonic truth--the ideal river rather than the polluted reality, love as we dream it rather than as we experience it, grief noble and uplifting rather than our distracted weeping. It is necessary to our and to our survival and our sanity."
--Pamela Brown

Classical Net--a great starting point for info on classical music.

My absolute favorite composer...W. A. Mozart

The Lake County Chamber Players--I founded this loosely-organized group of amateur and semi-pro musicians in 2002 as an outlet for my urge to practice and perform more often from the huge and exciting repetoire of chamber music. Since then, we have given several performances in our area and even have a bit of a following. :)

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra--my favorite orchestra, which also happens to be in my hometown!

My collection of favorite musical jokes.

My cheeky page celebrating my favorite rock band.

A note left for a pianist from his wife: "Gone Chopin, have Liszt, Bach in a Minuet."
